Officials who withdrew lakhs to repair breaches in dock | Flood Scare Aftermath | | Mufti asks close aides to act against erring persons Fazal Khan Early Times Report srinagar, Apr 4: The state government has taken a serious note about officials withdrawing lakhs of rupees for repairing breaches and other damages which were caused due to the September 2014 floods. Sources told Early Times the recent flood scare in Kashmir revealed that many breaches which were shown as repaired on papers turned out to be a "cosmetic measure" on the ground. "Departments which were assigned the job of filling in these breaches had taken temporary steps by just putting sand bags over the places from where water had gushed out during September 2014," they said. At many places, sources said, that these breaches were left unattended but money has been withdrawn for repairing these. "Discrepancies came to fore soon after the water levels increased in the rivers flowing across Kashmir," they added. An official while talking to Early Times said, "It's unfortunate that only temporary measures were taken to fill in the breaches and repair the damage which was caused due to last year's deluge." Sources said that new dispensation has taken a serious note of the "lackadaisical attitude" of the officials who were assigned the job of filling in the breaches. "There is every possibility of new government ordering a probe into alleged discrepancies. Not repairing these breaches could have spelled doom for the people again if rains had not stopped, and had not the water levels receded," sources added. They said the matter has been brought into the notice of the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and he is understood to have told his close cabinet colleagues to get the matter probed at the earliest so that stern action could be taken against the erring officials who for petty monetary gains put the lives of lakhs of people at stake. An insider said that some people with the vested interests took full advantage of the post 2014 September floods. "Soon after the flood waters receded in Kashmir last year election fever gripped the politicians and the former ministers. They (former ministers) forgot about the breaches and the damages which were caused to spill channels and the river embankments," they added. Sources said that a few officials allegedly joined hands with contractors and took cosmetic measures to claim that breaches have been repaired. "The state government taking a serious note of their acts has put these officials and contractors in a tight spot. If the charges leveled against the officials are proved they can face termination and the contractors could be black listed," sources added. They said government has sought the complete details of the places which witnessed breaches last year and the action taken report. "If the water levels had increased this time around most of the breaches which the officers had claimed were repaired recently would have given off and led to many areas getting submerged," they added. Sources said that Government deciding to take stern action against the erring officials is giving sleepless nights to officials, who were at the key positions when the breaches were repaired last year. |
