SRINAGAR, Apr 4: Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCC&I) today demanded that announcement of package for the traders affected by September 2014 devastating flood is expedited so that the traders start afresh without any further delay.
Addressing a press conference here, KCC&I President, Sheikh Ashiq Ahmad said that chamber had expected that package would be announced in the first week of April, adding that t no indications have been received so far. Ashiq said that recent flood like situation should give a fillip to the announcement of package.
"We were expecting that package for the traders would be announced in the first week of April, but so far no such announcement has been made.
The chamber would urge that this process is expedited so that the affected traders are compensated in adequate manner without any further delay," KCC&I President.
Ashiq expressed concern over the cancellation of booking made by intending tourists due to recent flood like situation in the valley. He said that such things should not happen and all the stakeholders including media should play a positive role in this respect. He added that cancellations tend to portray a negative image of Kashmir and its tourism.
"Dubai had a sand storm yesterday, but it did not impact the tourist arrivals to that place. On the other side, mere threat of flood leads to cancellation of booking by tourists intending to visit Kashmir. We are very much worried over this negative trend and it has to be corrected.
The cancellation not only affects travel and tour operators, hotels, guest houses, houseboats, transport and pony wallas, but the other connected sectors like handicraft, horticulture and general trade," said KCC&I President.
Taking a dig at the defunct drainage system of Srinagar, Ashiq said that it was due to this reason only that there was water logging in commercially important areas of Lal Chowk, Hari Singh High Street and Residency Road in the summer capital of the state. He demanded that effective drainage system should be put in place in the Srinagar city so that in future such a 'disturbing' situation does not emerge.
"The KCC&I would urge the government to take effective measures for strengthening of bunds of Jhelum which had breached in September 2014 flood. We shall be holding meetings with Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and other concerned authorities to ensure that wrongs done in the past are corrected," said KCC&I President.
Ashiq said that meetings will also be held with the government higher ups so that necessary measures like repair of roads are taken at the earliest.
He said that it is important that issues like round the year connectivity of Kashmir with outside world and capping of airfare are given due importance by the people at helm. He added that assessment with respect to losses suffered by businessmen in recent flood like situation is yet to be done.
