Early Times Report
Jammau, Apr 4: After reconstitution of Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), the workers accuse the leaders of considering favourites for the posts of district presidents.
Sources within the PCC informed Early Times that party leadership is all set to rope in a few of its favourites for the posts of district presidents in some districts of Jammu region, however, the yardstick for appointing new incumbents remains the same and i.e. preferential treatment to few individuals.
"The process of appointing new presidents for some districts has been set into motion by the PCC president Ghulam Ahmad Mir Satish Sharma son of former MP Madan Lal Sharma is likely to be handed over the charge of District President Jammu (Rural) while a former Conservator of Forests Mukerji Sharma may be appointed as District President of Samba," sources said.
The Congress, it seems, is not ready to learn lessons from history as there are instances from the past when outsiders and retired bureaucrats were given party tickets or given key posts but after some time they quit the party to join other political outfits or contest elections as independents.
"Outsiders and retired officers' entry into the Congress has not benefitted at all instead it damaged the essence of the party BR Kundal and Abdul Ghani Kohli's entry and exit from the party as per their suitability should not be forgotten," sources said.
Sources said that it is not only the party insiders who are trying to influence the appointments of district presidents but some elements from outside the party are also interfering in the internal matters of the party by manipulating the selection of candidates for the district cadre posts.
"It may sound incredible to some that a senior functionary of the Peoples' Democratic Party is pressurizing PCC president to approve the name of Pankaj Dogra as the District President for Kathua," sources maintained.
Sources further revealed that some of the Vice Presidents, General Secretaries and Secretaries are being made as incharge of different districts in order to recommend the name of appropriate candidates for the posts of district presidents.
"Appointing incharge for districts is an exercise to befool the party cadres. This is mere eyewash as ultimately the incharge leaders would propose the names of those whose candidatures have already been finalized," sources said.
Sources said that a sense of uneasiness is growing up in party circles as a group of leaders is not at all satisfied with the Executive Committee and also the manner in which the PCC president is running the affairs of the party.
The growing resentment within the PCC would lead to creation of more groups which is already grappled with dissension from the disgruntled elements within the party.
"PCC president is not initiating any steps to stem the rot of groupism in the party. Being president he should try to take all on board to defuse the growing dissent but sorry to say that Mir is acting at the behest of one particular powerful family of the state and doing nothing," sources said.
