Brick Klin owners treat labourers like slaves | | | Arun Trisal
Early Times Report
Kathua, Apr 4 : Union government talks about all round development and Prime Minister of India accepts labors as part of his family members but the labour class continues to get exploited. Thousands of labourers from outside the state move towards J&K for employment of different labor works in industries and brick Kilns but no medical facility is provided by these entrepreneurs. They openly play with their lives. The labor class lives a miserable life as nobody listens to their grievances and fight for their rights. Labor Department Kathua also is blind to the suffering of laborers. The department visited the brick kilns but in off season when no labourers were around. Ram Lakhan, a laborer who hails from Utter Pardesh said the Kiln do not provide medicare and sanitation. He said Smoke, dust and other waste materials affect the health of laborers but no medical facility even first aid has been provided by owners. Women also work in such kilns but their minor children play with dust. Many laborers suffer from Asthma and skin diseases. The entrepreneurs do not provide medical allowance to such sick laborers and they consult doctors on their own. When contacted Labour officer, Pawan Kumar Mansotra, at Asstt Labor Commissioner Office Kathua, said entrepreneurs must provide such facility to the labourer. He said there are strong laws against such violators. It is pertinent to mention here that according to norms, Labour department should pay frequent visits to such kilns, inspect labourers' record, check medical and other facilities being provided to them which includes schooling for their children, sewage system for women laborers, provident fund etc. SOIL, a Kathua based NGO demanded an inquiry against the violators and corrupt officers. |
