Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 30: The fresh bout of unseasonal rains will inflict more pain to farmers who are already reeling under heavy crop damages.
The entire Jammu region is in the grip of Western Disturbance since early morning which is slated to last till Fridayevening. The heavy rains since morning will damage the standing crops which remained unscathed by earlier spells.
Deputy Director Agriculture Chander Mohan Sharma said, "The fresh rains will worsen the already precarious situation. Already 70 % of the Rabi crops have been damaged by the unseasonal rains. Today's rain will hamper the harvesting of wheat, oats, fodder and pulses. The rain will not let the standing crops dry properly".
"Due to the rise in temperature, the humidity levels have also increased which may cause diseases to crops. The scenario is quite grim, it is a natural calamity", said Sharma. Meanwhile the weatherman has informed the sudden change in the weather is due to the Western disturbance which will remain active for another 24 hours. Since morning the Jammu division has received 12.5 mm of rainfall. The incessant rains led to sharp decline in maximum temperature in Jammu today, with mercury registering a maximum of 20.6 degrees which is 15 degrees below the normal. After remaining closed for major part of the day, the 300 kilometer Jammu-Srinagar national highway- was partially opened in the evening for clearing the stranded vehicles bound for valley.
Traffic police official said, "Today at 8 AM the highway was closed at Peerah, Ramban after heaving washed away a stretch of the highway. The traffic remained suspended till 3 PM and in the meantime men and machines of Border Roads Organization (BRO) cleared the debris and made it motor able. Now the traffic movement is moving at a snail's pace".
"At present more than 2000 vehicles are stranded on highway. Our first priority is to clear those with weather permitting. There is less likelihood that any fresh traffic will be allowed on Friday", he added.
