Delhi needs to reject outright Moon’s offer of mediation | Pak has no locus standi in J&K | | Early times Report JAMMU, Apr 30: Statement of Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that Islamabad wants good neighbourly relations with India has fortunately not evoked positive response from New Delhi till date. In an interview with the Saudi Gazette, Nawaz Sharif was quoted as saying that “Pakistan is ready to engage with India in a constructive dialogue for negotiated settlement of all issues, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir”. He complained that New Delhi “unilaterally” called-off the bilateral dialogue process in August last on a "frivolous pretext". Nawaz Sharif referred to New Delhi's cancellation of Foreign Secretary-level talks last year after the Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi Abdul Basit held meeting with Kashmiri separatists, including Shabir Ahmad Shah, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, despite the Indian Foreign Office had cautioned him that his meetings with Kashmiri separatists would not be appreciated by India. However, the statement of Nawaz Sharif evoked a positive response from the office of the UN Secretary General. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s deputy spokesman Farhan Haq yesterday said that the offer by the Secretary General to “use his good offices has been on the table”. “Ban Ki-moon is willing to use his good offices to help India and Pakistan resolve their differences if both the nations want his intervention,” Haq for the UN Chief said. "That offer has already been on the table if both parties want it. So if both parties want it, we are available," Haq also told reporters at the daily briefing. Moon’s deputy was responding to a question on “whether the UN Chief would renew the offer of his good offices to both the countries in the backdrop of Sharif saying that there is no sign of India desiring resumption of dialogue with Pakistan”. New Delhi must not pay any heed to this UN secretary General’s offer. The situation in Kashmir is already grave. Any positive response from New Delhi to this offer would further embolden the anti-national forces in the Valley, which must not happen at any cost. The need of the time is to adopt a pro-active approach to defeat Pakistan and its conduits like Hurriyat Conference and not an engagement with anyone who does recognized India as a sovereign country and J&K its integral part.
