Snatches back Hockey sticks presented to players minutes after | Hockey Association trashes Minister’s benevolence | |
Abodh Sharma Early Times Report Jammu , April 30
In a bizarre incident that would hang heads of many sports administrators in shame, the Hockey Association of J&K snatched the Hockey sticks presented by a Minister to the players, minutes after the latter left the venue. Sources informed that in a rare gesture, the Minister for PHE, Sukhnandan Choudhary presented Hockey sticks to the young Hockey players at K K Hakhu Stadium Wednesday, but soon after the Minister left the scene, an office bearer of the Hockey association, identified as G S Bakshi, appeared on the scene and collected the sticks back from the players, fizzling out the euphoria and the enthusiasm generated by the benevolence of the Minister. The sticks were then bundled into a car that soon left the venue. “It is not only a betrayal with the players, but also an insult of the senior Minister who walked an extra mile to encourage young players by presenting Hockey sticks to them” said an insider, condemning the act of the senior office bearer of the association, which is headed by an ADG ranked Police officer. A player who had to follow the dictate of the official and surrender his stick expressing deep anguish said, “While association is expected to provide sticks from its own resources to the upcoming players to encourage them, here we were asked to return the stick that was presented to us by the Minister”. The act of the office bearer, who is the organizing secretary in the association, was deplored by a senior player, who supports many young and budding players from his own resources without being a part of the association. Sources said the Minister for PHE had visited the K K Hakhu Stadium last month to flag off a state hockey team to the national championship and during his visit had promised to donate hockey sticks to budding players. “To honour his commitment made to the players, minister had visited Wednesday and presented sticks to the players, before G S Bakshi snatched them off from players” an insider revealed. Questioning the role of the association, certain players pleading anonymity said that the association had recently sent a team to the National championship without any railway reservation, while J&K State Sports Council pays concessional AC-III tier fair to each of the players who represent the state in the national championships.
