Double Standard: Pak opposes return of KPs to Valley, changes demography of Gilgit-Baltistan | | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 30: Double standard of Pakistan has been exposed as Islamabad has opposed return of Kashmiri Pandits to their native places in Kashmir. On the one hand Pakistan is opposing return of KPs to their native places in Kashmir while on the other Pakistani is settling outsiders in Gilgit-Baltistan province to make local natives as minority. Senge Hassan Sering, convenor of the Washington based Institute of Gilgit-Baltistan Studies, during his visit to Jammu, had exposed nefarious game-plan of Pakistan to change demography of Gilgit-Baltistan. Pakistani authorities on the one hand have leased this region to China for brute exploitation of natural resources while on the other hand Pakistani government has started settling outsiders in this region. The demography in Gilgit Baltistan in POK has changed so much that the Shia, the original inhabitants of the land, have become a minority. Sunnis from Pakistan were given lucrative job offers and other incentives to settle in Gilgit-Baltistan. Former President Zia intended to shift the demographic balance of Gilgit-Baltistan in favour of Pakistan, primarily a Sunni state, and the orders to this effect were carried out by successive governments. The Chinese interest in Gilgit-Baltistan dates back to the construction of Karakoram Highway… Similarly, the Northern Light Infantry, which mainly comprised men from POK (it was deployed in the Kargil War) is increasingly manned by non-locals as the local people are no longer trusted. The ICG report on the State of Sectarianism states, “Since 2001, Shia resentment over the inclusion of Sunni religious rituals and a perceived anti-Shia bias in textbooks for public schools has resulted in school boycotts and occasional clashes and curfews.” Shockingly Pakistan has changed demography of Gilgit-Baltistan but it is opposing return of KPs to their native place. “Any effort to create special dedicated townships or zones, or any other step to alter the demographic make-up of Jammu and Kashmir, is in violation of the UN Security Council resolutions,”the spokeswoman, of Pakistan Tasneem Aslam, told a regular briefing today. “We have already seen how the people of Jammu and Kashmir are resisting it,” she said. She did not elaborate, but was apparently referring to recent protests in Indian Kashmir.
