Army likely to give land for expansion of JU, airport | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 22: The army is likely to give land for the expansion of the Jammu university and the Jammu airport. The defence minister Manohar Parrikar has reportedly given this assurance to the Governor NN Vohra. The Governor, when he was heading the State, had pointedly written for this to the defence minister. He had in the past also asked for this but as head of the state, when the state was under Governor's rule, the made specific appeal for it.Sources said the defence minister, who was earlier the chief minister of the Goa, has agreed in principal to it. Sources said Parrikar understands the urgency and the need of the state to get land for the two major important projects of the Jammu division. "The Jammu airport expansion for quite some time. It can't handle more traffic leave alone the night flights. It land is must as about one crore people arrive for the darshan of the Vaishno Devi which includes people with big pockets. This can turn around the economy of the Jammu, which could be affected after train had reached Katra," said a senior official, privy to the development.Another important concern is the expansion of the Jammu university. The university established in the new campus in the '80s need immediate expansion. The strength of the university has increased manifold but the space has not increased and it needs immediate expansion."The issue has been raised in the past also but Parikkar, who is a graduate of IIT, which has one of the best campuses in the country, understands the need for it than other and has assured that this will be done at the earliest," said the official. The expansion of these two projects had gained momentum when the BJP was earlier in the power. Though the state congress leaders did try to push in them, but the central leadership was either not much concerned or was more focused on the Kashmir." The BJP is already facing criticism in the Jammu region for having surrendered to the PDP for the sake of power. The handing over of the land by the army will help in deflecting the public attention and also counter that it's the BJP which is really sensistive and serious to the people of the Jammu. And, Parrikar understands it than another," said a senior BJP leader. |
