LeT district commander killed in Kulgam

Srinagar, May 25: In a major achievement against militants, a District Commander of LeT was killed in an encounter in Yaripora area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam District.
Police spokesman in a statement said that militants fired upon an Army vehicle near Kanjikula, Yaripora, this afternoon resulting in injuries to an Army Jawan. The injured was shifted to the Base Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Soon after the attack, the Army along with Kulgam police launched a cordon and search operation in the Kanjikula village.
During the search operation, the joint search party came under fire in an orchard, which was retaliated ensuing an encounter in which a militant was killed.
The slain militant was later identified Ayatullah Bhat alias Khoumaini alias Maaz who was functioning as District Commander of LeT. Khoumaini was active since 2010 and was involved in various militant activities including killing of Sarpanch Gul Mohammad resident of Hawoora in 2012, killing and snatching of weapons from police and CRPF in Arwani and Awneera Shopian. He was also involved in the killing of Zakir Syed Bhat in Sangas, Kulgam.
Khomaini a close associate of Divisional Commander LeT Abu Qasim was also instrumental in recruiting many youth into militancy including Abass Malla and Zubair Bhat.
As per the army, "On 25 May 2015, a patrolling party of Rashtriya Rifles was engaged by fire by unidentified militants in Kanjikul Village in Yaripora, Kulgam. The firing resulted in injury to one soldier. In the ensuing operation, wherein a specific search was carried out in village Kanjikul, one militant was killed. The slain militant was identified as Ayatullah Bhat alias Khomeini S/o Hafizulla Ahmad Bhat and was the LeT district commander. One AK-47, ammunition and one pistol was recovered. In the meantime, the injured soldier, Sep Dharma Ram, was shifted to 92 Base Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries."
