Gun makers' peaceful protest fails | To meet Labour Commissioner to press demands | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 25: The agitation of the of the gun factory workers has completed second week without results as indifferent factory owners seem in no mood to resolve the issue. The workers have been pressing for proper and timely wages. Sources told Early Times that the contract system has been a curse rather than a blessing for the workers. "The present situation has evolved due to the selfishness of the employers. Actually each employer is allowed to manufacture a specific number of guns in a year by the government but they force the workers violate the government guidelines and manufacture increased number of guns.," they said further alleging that owners allot work to workers only when they get demand from the dealers otherwise these workers have to remained without job. "These gun manufacturers get annual quota for manufacturing guns which varies from 450 to 1800. When demand rises, owners allot contract to the workers and vice versa which renders these workers jobless as a result they had to face hardship to run their families. This is done by the employers only to secure their profit," they alleged further saying that these guns are sold to the dealers of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh etc. Sometimes workers get job for a month and sit idle for another month and this practice continues for the entire year. The workers have no job security as most of them have not been covered under ESI and their Provident Fund is not deducted only due to self-interest of the employers who earn huge fortune out of gun manufacturing. They further informed that a meeting has been scheduled between the workers and Assistant Labour Commissioner Jammu on Tuesday at 3 pm in this regard. "Earlier a deputation of gun workers met with the Assistant Labour Commissioner Jammu on Saturday and apprised him of the matter regarding the exploitation of workers by their employers by forcing them to work on contract basis and that too with nominal rates which were fixed five years ago and urged him to intervene into issue to sort it out," sourced informed. |
