Guru hanging: No buyers for Abdullahs doublespeak | | | Peerzada Ummer
Srinagar, May 25: "As far as I am concerned, the courts had given the death sentence (to Afzal Guru). His plea was put in front of the President. He rejected the plea. The matter is over." This was stated by former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's father Farooq Abdullah on February 9, 2013, the day when Afzal Guru was hanged in New Delhi's Tihar jail.It is now more than two years that the drubbed National Conference and its president Omar Abdullah are wailing and condemning Guru's execution, saying that UPA did it for the political benefits. On the day when Guru was hanged, Omar as the CM convened a press conference in Srinagar, asking people not to take law in their own hands. In his 15-minute address to the media, Omar didn't even utter a single word of condemnation for Guru's hanging. Now, when his party has been rejected by the people, Omar is desperately trying to remain in the news, but to no avail.People here are asking questions like why Omar didn't resign as the CM when Guru was hanged? Why did Omar raise his voice that time? Why didn't he accuse UPA of reaping political benefits out of Guru's hanging at that time? What is the meaning of raising the issue now?Senior Kashmiri journalist Iftikhar Gilani who is based in Delhi objected to Omar Abdullah's claims related to Guru hanging. "What had transpired in the meeting between him and Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde at North Block on January 30, some 10 days before Guru was executed?" Gilani asked. "Had Shinde confided Omar and why the latter didn't make a fuss and put his foot down?""On Feb 8 evening, why Shinde on phone told Omar, 'Jo baat us din hoi thi, woh kal ho raha hai. Take care'," Gilani said. "The circumstances show Omar was in know of things. He could have spilled the beans and allowed Guru lawyers to move Supreme Court to get a reprieve." |
