Gunmen open fire at BSNL outlet | One killed, two critically injured | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
BARAMULLA, May 25: One person died while two others were injured after unidentified gunmen opened fire at a BSNL outlet in Apple rich town of Sopore in Baramulla district on Monday. The attack came less than 48 hours when militants had lobbed two grenades towards Airtel Mobile communication tower in Kralteng area of Sopore on May 24. Sources told Early Times that, "the militants started indiscriminate firing on Iqra telecommunication located in Iqbal Market of Apple town Sopore which works as a franchisee of BSNL, resulting in panic as everybody ran for life. The incident took place at around 10:40 A.M near the general bus stand of Sopore town and the attackers fled the scene in a crowded market, said sources. A local eyewitness said that when firing stopped three employees were seen in a pool of blood and were rushed to the nearby Sub District Hospital Spore for treatment. A senior police official said that the militants allegedly targeted the employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) who were standing outside their shop in Iqbal Market of Sopore town on Monday morning. The three injured worked with Iqra Telecom, franchises of the BSNL were identified as Mohammad Rafiq (26) of Handwara, Ghulam Mohammad Bhat (40) and Imtiyaz Ahmad Lone (30), both residents of Sopore town are being treated, the official said. Official said the one among the injured, Mohammad Rafiq (26), a resident of Handwara area of Kupwara district, succumbed to his injuries at the Srinagar's SMHS hospital. This was the second militant attack in Spore town in less than 48 hours. Earlier during the intervening night of May 23 and 24, suspected militants had hurled a grenade at a residential compound in Kralteng area where a mobile transmission tower was installed, official added. Early times have learnt from reliable sources that, the militants have been asking telecommunication authorities to wind up their services in Sopore, since at least one month after some of their (militant's) equipments went missing from one of the telecommunication towers. It is pertinent to mention here that the poster of Lashkar-e-Islam were seen on electric poles which has warned telecommunication companies to close all networking services in Sopore town. It was written in a poster that we warn the retailers to stop recharging the subscribers within seven days otherwise there will be dire consequences if they didn't follow the poster. Earlier this month, militants threatened with dire consequences cell phone service providers in Sopore after equipment purportedly installed by militants on Badami Bagh cell phone tower was removed. The equipment had reportedly been installed to improve their communication system since the tower was located at a vantage point. Meanwhile Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, north Kashmir Range, Gareeb Das said that few days back they had seized the equipment which was installed by militants on cell phone tower in Sopore. Police and Paramilitary forces have cordoned off the whole area and a search operation has been started to nab the attackers, Said DIG. |
