Breaking News: Omar admits he was a "weak Chief Minister" | 'Shinde hanged Guru without bothering whether I like it or not" | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 25: Finally, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah has acknowledged that he was a "weak Chief Minister" and had no say in the erstwhile Congress led UPA government at the Centre. Omar's recent assertion that he was not taken in loop before the former Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde signed the death warrant of the Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru has opened a Pandora's box. Omar revealed on Sunday that he was out for a dinner with his sister at a Delhi restaurant, when he received a call from the then Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde informing him that he had signed the papers for Guru to be hanged early next morning and asking him to make law and order arrangements. Omar said, "I asked the Home Minister whether he was sure that nothing can be done. He said no as he had signed the paper and warrant has been issued and asked me to deal with the implications." "It's strange that Centre before taking such an important decision didn't consult the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, with whom Congress shared power in the state. This proves how weak the former JK Chief Minister was," said an analyst. He said, "Omar during his six year tenure remained busy in chopper rides and fed people with hollow slogans only. The Centre never felt any need to consult him before taking any decision. Omar as the Chief Minister from 2008 to 2014 never raised any objection for being treated shabbily as he was busy reaping the fruits of power." Another Kashmir watcher said, "Congress after handing over the Chief Minister's chair to Omar realized that he is a wonder kid who would remain busy with the toys like twitter, helicopter rides and overseas trips that is why Centre never took him seriously." Recalling 2010, the Kashmir watcher said, "When summer unrest was at peak in Kashmir the then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram handled the Kashmir affairs directly from Delhi. Even the decision about imposition and lifting of curfew across Kashmir was taken by then Home Secretary and the Union Home Minister." Critics were of the opinion that Omar has raked up the issue of Afzal Guru hanging at this juncture to address his constituency in Kashmir, where his party faced a humiliating defeat in the last assembly elections. "He (Omar) admitting that he was unaware about the hanging of Afzal Guru has not helped his cause. Instead it has exposed him," said a critic. He said that Omar became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2009 due to the blessings of the All India Congress Committee Chief Sonia Gandhi. "Omar's only qualification was that he was a friend of Rahul Gandhi, Sonia's son. Otherwise he lacked the acumen and the qualities to hold the highest seat of power in Jammu and Kashmir. His (Omar's) dismal performance in the office proved that he was incompetent as he failed to deliver." Omar said, "Now he has arrived at a conclusion that they (Congress) wanted to deny BJP another handle to beat them within the general elections and, therefore, the easiest two people to be hanged were Ajmal Kasab because he was a foreign national and Afzal Guru. Whether I like it or not, but they did it." The former Chief Minister is crying over the split milk and has started complaining like a kid after being ousted from power. Had he taken the "insults," which he faced at the hands of Centre during his tenure, seriously he would have called it quits but he knew it very well that he would never become the Chief Minister of the state again, so he closed his eyes and ears and remained in power till the last day |
