Unique concept of concrete igloo huts coming up in Jammu | | | Mishu Gupta
Early Times Report
Jammu. May 25: A local architect engineer has embarked upon a novel concept of designing igloo huts in Jammu region, particularly to attract tourists. Though such igloo huts are established in Bhaderwah area, but the same are made of fibre glass and are temporary arrangements for tourist, Vivek Sagar Sharma's unique technology is based on construction of concrete huts in shell forms which can be turned into residential complexes also with all household necessities into it. " I have applied for the patent of such structures from department of industrial policy and promotion, ministry of commerce and industries, and intend to own land near the various tourist spots in Jammu so that such domes could serve as tourist huts," said Vivek while talking to Early Times. Vivek's igloo dome is based on a beehive concept of construction where in a small mound of concrete, sand and gravel is made with nearly 500 holes into it. Plastic pipes of size of 8-10 feet are pushed into these holes to make it a porcupine type of structure. " A heavy material cloth is thrown over it to give it a dome like structure. There after the entire structure is plastered with concrete, sand and gravel which is supported by the pipes (termed by him as tentacles) and a igloo concrete hut is constructed," said Vivek. As per its construction technique, the plinth supports 4 feet wall of bricks, after which the tentacle beehive module is placed in the centre and concrete material is spread over the cloth. The average thickness of the concrete slab is 2-2.5 inches with 4 mm steel randomly used to tie the dome structure. The general slab of a normal roof is 5-6 inches thickness. He said that a general concept of ballooning of a tomb is not applied in his structures which are all- weather resistance against earthquakes, hurricanes, snow blizzards or wind storms. Vivek has constructed one such sample hut at Babliana, 10 kiliometres away from Jammu and is promoting his idea among the people of Jammu. " Shell like an igloo is the most stable and most natural form of structure which has the ability to with stand all types of skeletal movements and easily transit the unexpected loading due to earthquake , hurricanes , snow or windstorms," said Vivek. On its cost efficiency, Vivek said that its research and development cost him little expensive , but for making a single unit igloo hut of one marla housing a small kitchen, double bedded space, table with two chairs and a small bathroom will not cost more than Rs 2.5 lakhs. Since the dome is a single storeyed unit, a spherical water channel runs along the base wall of the shell that helps in rain water harvesting and can be used for small plantation drive around the hut also. The unique concept -mostly suitable for tourism development- is a brainchild of Vivek Sagar Sharma who runs a NGO Prasaar and has taken up the project under Sarve Bhumee focused on making domes, shells and igloos huts.
