National highway connecting Ladakh with Kashmir opens for both way traffic
5/31/2015 11:58:08 PM

Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 31: The national highway, linking the Ladakh region with the Kashmir valley was opened for both way traffic today. The traffic was suspended yesterday due to landslides at Panimatha near Zojila pass. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, immediately pressed into service sophisticated machines and men and cleared the landslides.
All the vehicles, which were stopped on both sides of the Zojila after landslides, were allowed to move towards their respective destinations later in the day. Though the highway is open for both ways but only one-way traffic is allowed at Zojila where the road is still very narrow because of huge walls of snow on both sides. ''We allowed traffic from Ladakh to Kashmir this morning and vehicles from here to other side of the Zojila pass will be allowed in the afternoon,'' a Traffic police official said. The road reopened early this month after remaining closed for about five winter months due to snowfall. Meanwhile, one-way traffic continued on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country. Traffic was allowed from Srinagar to Jammu today, he said. Similarly only one-way traffic is plying on Mughal road connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region. Today vehicles will ply from Rajouri and Poonch to Shopian. Efforts are being made to restore two way traffic on both the roads..
