Srinagar, June 4: Undue rainy season in Kashmir over past two months is posing threat to apple, other fruits and vegetables and as famers continues to face the same fate from last four years, demands implementation of Crop insurance schemes on priority. Experts consider months of May and June crucial for apple Production as warmth surroundings helps apple production to grow in size, however warn that prevailing inclement weather is likely to affect transplantation of paddy and other vegetable sapling and increase chances for apple production to get affected with fungal diseases. "Fungal diseases like scab which usually needs 8 to 9 sprays during this season actually needs dry weather for at least 48 hours after spray, but since it is rainy season so fungal diseases explode in orchards in wet weather conditions as moisture remains on leaves and trunks of apple trees for longer periods and automatically invite diseases," said Dr Amarjeet, an Expert At a time when prices of vegetables imported from outside state is touching skies, farmers believe that rainy season is hampering their activities of transplanting saplings of different vegetables from Nurseries to open fields and fear a huge loss in their business. Fruit growers demanding implementation of Crop insurance scheme on war footing bases said that they are witnessing consecutive fourth year of loss to apple Production due to uncontrolled mayhem of fungal disease in their orchards and are also worried about moisture in their orchards this year too due to untimely rainy season which according to them invites fungal and parasitic diseases in trees. "Year 2015 like previous four years down the line is proving hazardous for us; orchardists are buried under bank loans and loans of commission agents as during last three years apple Production is not only consecutively decreasing but quality of apple production also enormously degraded, so we all have pinned hopes on Crop insurance scheme of Government."Said Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, one Fruit Grower Following long pending demand of Orchardists to bring apple Production under Crop insurance scheme, Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Syed on Wednesday said that 'an effective mechanism has to be worked out for providing weather-based crop insurance, in particular to apple orchardists of Jammu and Kashmir, so that some sort of financial security and risk cover is extended to Orchardists. However Orchardists demand that Crop insurance scheme should be implemented as soon as possible so that loss to apple Production of this year so far due to heavy hail storm in most parts of south and North Kashmir could be covered. As rainy season has completely dominated over all seasons of Kashmir this year, according to Meteorological department 'Intermittent light to moderate rain with thunderstorms will occur in the Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh regions today with improvement in overall weather conditions only towards late afternoon, however Light rain with thunderstorms are expected across Jammu and Kashmir again next week.
