Geelani hints at accepting 'Indian' as his nationality | Anything for Passport | | ET Report Srinagar, June 4: The Hurriyat Conference led by the hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Thursday hinted at Geelani would complete all the formalities, including him mentioning his nationality as Indian, to get a passport to travel to Saudia Arabia to meet his ailing daughter there. In a statement a Hurriyat (G) spokesman said: "Traveling on the Indian passport is a compulsion of every Kashmiri and without this compulsion; the Muslims of this will not even be able to perform their important religious obligation of Hajj. Geelani too is compelled to complete the formalities in this regard." The spokesman said Geelani has been asked by the Regional Passport Officer Srinagar to reach Passport office here on Friday at 10: 15 am to complete required formalities with regard to his travel documents for which he had earlier submitted his online application form. He said that family members of Geelani have completed all the formalities but due to Geelani being under house arrest he was unable to visit the Passport office to complete his application for the passport. Spokesman rejected the view that Geelani actually doesn't need a passport. "It is just a hypothesis and it has nothing to do with the reality." Pertinently, the Hurriyat hawk had submitted an online application last month to seek a passport to visit his ailing daughter in Saudia Arabia. However, the application was rejected due to formalities being incomplete. Soon after Geelani applied for the passport, the BJP spokesman Khalid Jehangir issued a hard hitting statement asking the Hurriyat hardliner to accept that he is an "Indian" and give an affidavit that he (Geelani) would not indulge in anti-India activities in future. "The passport is issued to Indian citizens who believe in its democracy and integrity," Jehangir had said.
