Controversy dodges Sindhu darshan yatra as Govt turns down BJP’s proposal | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 4: The controversy hasdogged this time to annual Sindhu darshan yatra with BJP and State Government organizing two separate yatras again this time. Though BJP had appealed the State Government to postpone yatra which is going to start from June 12 to June 23 as some Union ministers are also intending to take part in it the same was turned down by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayed. According to sources Sayed had categorically said that the yatra will be organized on the same date which has been decided by the Ladakhis and there will be no change in the same. Sources said BJP had this time intended to hold yatra jointly as was done previously during the Vajpayee led government at Centre. But its proposal in this regard was turned down by none else than ChiefMinister himself, sources added. Sources said the BJP has now decided to take its own yatra on June 18 through its Sindhu Darshan Committee. The yatra will be led by senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar. It will reach Jammu on June 18 and after being given a rousing reception here will leave for Ladakh next day. The three day Sindhu Darshan festival will start at the bank of river Sindh in Ladakh on June 23 and it will culminated on June 25. The yatra will reach back to Jammuon June 29. Hundreds of yatris from different parts of country as usual will take part in this year's yatra, sources said, adding some Central ministers are likely to participate in it. During the three day long yatra various cultural programmes showcasing the rich and old culture of Ladakh will be presented by local artists and school children. The lecturers on contribution of Ladakhis in nation building and Himalayan culture will also be highlighted. Sources said a traditional pooja of river Sindho will also be performed during the festival period and its contribution to enriching Indian civilization will be highlighted. It may be recalled that Sindhu Darshan yatra was launched on the initiative of former Deputy Prime Minister and veteran BJP leader, L K Advani in 1996 to recall the long association of people of India with Sindhu river on the banks of which Indian culture flourished for centuries together. Mr Advani who belongs to Sindh area in Pak prior to partition had a nostalgia for the river as it linked him and other Sindhis to their birth place. So he initiated the yatra to keep the memories of Sindh afresh in their minds. Since then the yatra continued till the UPA Government came to power at Delhi in 2004 and later the State Government started another yatra and named it as Ladakh festival instead of Sindhu darshan. However BJP led Sindho Darshan Committee continued its annual feature in Ladakh by holding a three day yatra every year in which large number of people also participated every year from different parts of country.
