Upper reaches experience snow, plains lashed by heavy rains resulting chill

Srinagar, June 4: Chilly weather conditions prevailed in the Kashmir valley, where the upper heights experienced fresh snowfall while plains, including summer capital, Srinagar, were lashed by heavy rains resulting in considerable cold, forcing people to wear more warm and woollen clothes.
A Met department spokesman said here today that wet weather will continue during the next 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir, where dry weather is predicted from Saturday onwards till June 8.
The maximum temperature witnessed considerable drop yesterday though at some places, including Srinagar, the maximum temperature was above normal. He said there would be isolated rain during the next 24 hours.
However, the weather will turn dry on Saturday, he added.
Bad weather in the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg sector forced authorities to suspend the second phase of Gandola Cable Car (GCC), connecting highest ski poing Affarwat with base camp for precautionary measures.
There are strong icy cold winds besides dark clouds in the upper reaches, where fresh snowfall was experienced, an official of the GCC told UNI over phone from Gulmarg. He said yesterday also the second phase remained closed for precautionary measure.
However, first phase of GCC upto Kongdori was in operation, he said adding that it was very chilly because of snow on upper reaches. He said Gulmarg slopes were lashed by heavy rains since early this morning.
However, hundreds of tourists are arriving at the famed ski resort daily from different parts of the country, where more than 2000 people have died of heat strokes.
Met spokesman said the minimum temperature witnessed further drop due to 11.
