Pak army tweet smacks mischief | | | That the army and the ISI in Pakistan assume the responsibility of acting as politicians to make up for any lapses from the establishment in Islamabad is evident from the latest statement from the two wings of the Government in Pakistan. It is for the first time in the past 68 years that the Army and the ISI have commented on a political issue.Yes,there have been attempts by senior Army functionaries at raking up the Kashmir issue but that was done during the time Pakistan was under a spell of military rule.As military rulers from Gen. Ayub Khan to Pervez Musharraf it was part of their duty to issue statements on various political issues,on bilateral problems or issues with India or any other world situation or development. But it seems ironical if senior Army and the ISI functionaries talk about the Kashmir issue when there is a civilian Government in Islamabad.Once these senior Army functionaries indulge in political adventurism it indicates there is no cooperation and coordination between the Army brass and the civilian Government. Pakistan army recently claimed that Kashmir is a disputed territory. Pakistani army tweeted that Kashmir issue should be resolved according to the United Nations resolutions."Kashmir is an unfinished agenda of partition, Pak &Kashmir are inseparable. While we wish peace, stability in region, we want Kashmir's Just Resolution in the light of UN resolutions & as per aspirations of Kashmiris to bring lasting peace in the region," tweeted Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General quoting Pakistan Army chief General Raheel Sharif. This statement is indicative of the fact that the Army brass in Pakistan is keen to assume all the powers of the Government.Had it not been the case there was neither any compulsion nor any occasion for the Army to tweet a statement which is not normally within the domain of the Army or the ISI.That Kashmir is a political issue one cannot dispute it and hence it was not within the jurisdiction of the army or the ISI to make a statement voicing support for the resolution of the issue within the ambit of the UN resolution.Such statements are invariably voiced or dished out by politicians, whether in the opposition or in the ruling party. Does this mean that whatever is happening on the LOC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir had no backing from the ruling political leaders, including the Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif? If it is so Sharif should treat the latest statement from the Army and the ISI as a signal for attempts at st aging a coup against him.Yes there can be another alternative to the Army gaffe.Possibly the Army was conveying to Nawaz Sharif that the soldiers are the real boss and the politicians are subservient to them.In the light of the this tweet should New Delhi get ready to talk to the Army generals instead of the ruling politicians ? Well answer to this question should come from Nawaz Sharif because whatever the Army tweet has stated is a challenge to his authority. If the establishment in Islamabad has been pleading for the resumption of dialogue between India and Pakistan it should make it clear whether New Delhi has to hold talks with the politicians in power or with the Army and the ISI bosses whose writ runs in Pakistan. |
