Attacks on mobile towers scares tourists away from Kashmir
'Electronic media too plays spoilsport'

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 4: The recent militant attacks on towers of telecom companies in the Kashmir valley is likely to hit the tourism industry very hard, according to people associated with the industry.
The tourism players say the attacks have affected their business "more badly than the deluge of the September 14." They also say that most part of the tourism time is over but tourism-related activities are yet to pick up.
"It is a fact that the mobile connectivity got hit for some days due to the attacks. But the way the national media twisted the story has kept many intending visitors at bay," said Farooq Ahmad, a tourism player.
He said the tourism industry was trying very hard to come to terms with the situation created by last year's deluge but the attacks on the communication facilities have proved to be the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the Valley's tourism.
Hoteliers of the Valley say that they have received kick in the abdomen because many visitors, domestic as well as foreign, have cancelled their bookings because of fear created by the electronic media.
"We had expected a bumper tourism season this year, but the attack on mobile towers and the senseless media coverage have dashed our hopes," said Reyaz Ahmad, who works in a premier hotel of the Valley.
Reyaz said that violence occurs in many parts of the world "but when such incidents take place in the Valley, they are magnified and blown out of proportion."
"If a tyre of a vehicle bursts in the Valley, it is the electronic media that comes with breaking news that a 'bomb blast' has taken place," Reyaz said.
Others who talked to Early Times said that the fruit industry suffered heavily during the floods last year and this year too, hailstorm destroyed the orchards, signalling yet another poor fruit season.
If the tourism activities fail to resume in full, then the people will be plunged into the economic darkness, said these people.
