Valley shuts against Sopore serial killings | | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, June 17: Amid restrictions in some areas, a complete shutdown was observed across the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday against the recent killing spree in Sopore town. The call for shutdown had been given by separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah. Reports said shops, commercial establishments and educational institutions remained closed while public transport was off the roads in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley. Private vehicles and three wheelers plied on some roads in this capital city while vehicular movements largely remained restricted to the uptown area and the city outskirts. Situation in Srinagar city remained peaceful. However, in HMT area two youth were injured during clashes with the police. There were reports of minor clashes in Sopore and Bandipora area of north Kashmir. A senior police official told Early Times that police and paramilitary forces were deployed in strength especially in sensitive areas like Sopore and Palhallan townships to maintain law and order. According to reports, life was also affected in Chenab Valley of Jammu division due to the shutdown call. It may be recalled that unidentified gunmen have shot dead four civilians in past eight days in Sopore, Overall six people, including three former militants, and a separatist activist have been killed in last three weeks in the area. These killings have sparked protests in Sopore and Baramulla. Separatists have blamed "Indian intelligence agencies" for these killings, while police says it's the handiwork of militants. The state government has ordered a massive manhunt to trace the assassins who according to the police belong to a breakaway group of the Hizbul Mujahideen group. On Tuesday, police announced a bounty of Rs.10 lakh each on two Hizb breakaway militants identified as Abdul Qayoom Najar and Imtiyaz Ahmad Kandoo who are believed to be of Sopore town. Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed chaired a high level meeting here during which he discussed the killings in Sopore with senior army and police officials. |
