Police transfers: Merit often ignored when lobbies become dominant
Sr officers start posting SHOs of their choice in Jammu

Early Times Report
Jammu, June 17: It is often said in the state police circles that an officer needs to have a political lobby or the lobby of senior officers of the rank of SSP and above on his back to manage a good posting in the department. Merit is often ignored when such dominant groups become active.
When undeserving officers are preferred to the meritorious ones, the society is left with a police system which cares less about the citizens' security and safety. In J&K, it has been observed that merit is often ignored by police headquarters, especially during the posting of SHOs and chowki officers.
Police sources said the process of bringing choice SHOs to Jammu police stations has already begun. As a first step in this direction, four Inspectors, who were sent to other police ranges by the former Jammu IGP a few months back, have now been brought back to Jammu-Kathua range. To adjust them in different police stations, an equal number of SHOs would be transferred to other ranges. This violates DGP K Rajendra's directives that only those officers be transferred who have completed 2-3 years at a particular place.
All these four Inspectors would be first kept in Jammu district as per an order of DIG and then posted in police stations by the SSP. All of them knew about their transfers to Jammu-Kathua range at least a month in advance, sources said.
On April 17 also, some favourite Inspectors were brought back to Jammu range and posted in different police stations. Nagrota and Arnia police stations have become headless after the Tuesday's transfers.
Sources said the favourite Inspectors were likely to be posted as SHOs of police stations of City, Gandhinagar, Trikuta Nagar, Chhani Himmat, R S Pura, Bakshi Nagar and Janipura. The SHOs of these police stations were likely to be transferred in the near future, the sources added.
