Early Times Report

Anantnag, June 17: Primary health centre (PHC) Adalash, Srigufwara in district Anantnag continues to function from a rented room with a single doctor, as after the passage of over thirteen years, R&B department- the executive agency- has failed to complete the construction work on twenty bedded hospital building.
The construction on the 20 bedded building was started in year 2003, however from then the R&B department hasn't completed the work, resulting in sufferings to residents of the several villages of the area as in the absence of infra-structure residents are being forced to visit private clinics or far off hospitals.
Locals told Early Times that their repeated pleas went unheard. "In the last over seven year we tried our best to divert the attention of the government particularly of R&B and health department towards it but all went in vain as no one responded positively," Abdul Rashid, a local, said.
"We received nothing but only bundles of assurances from time to time till today from them," he said, when asked about the role of elected legislators of Pahalgam assembly constituency in pursuing the executive agency for the timely completion of the construction work on the hospital building.
They said that the hospital continues to function from a rented room in the village. "What one can expect from the hospital which is functioning from a rented room which is also in shambles," Rameez Ahmad said.
Locals said that only a single ISM doctor along few paramedical staff members is running the hospital. "No one from the village visits this hospital which is in a bad condition and lacks sufficient health care facilities," they said, adding for minor injuries they are forced to visits PHC Mattan, seven kilometers from the village.
When contacted, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Anantnag, Dr Fazil Kochak, admitted that the PHC there is functioning from a single room and is lacking basic facilities "There is no doubt that PHC is functioning in a single room but R&B department is responsible for the mess as they haven't yet handed over the building to us," he said.
He said that he himself visited new building and found few shortcomings in it. "They haven't yet completed the sanitary fitting," he added.
Dr Kochak said that shifting that hospital from the single room to new building is his priority.
"Once we shift the hospital all other requirements will be looked into," he said.
Executive Engineer R&B Showket Ahmad sought week's time for the completion of the work. "Tomorrow I will inspect the building and assure you that all the pending work will be completed in a week," he said, adding 98 pc work stands completed.
