Minister I&FC gives ultimatum to H&UDD ‘Prevent sewerage from going into Tawi, Ranbir Canal’ | | | G S Asgotra
Early Times Report Jammu, June 28: Intensifying its battle against Housing and Urban Development Department (H&UDD), the minister for Irrigation and Flood Control, Choudhary Sukhnadan has summoned the H&UD and its Urban Environment Engineering Department (UEED) to divert flowing of all sewerage into Ranbir Canal and Tawi River; otherwise he is compelled to barricade them. The The river and the canal have been exorbitantly polluted since Jammu Municipality Corporation (JMC) allowed flowing of sewerage water into these water bodies. Moreover, during the tenure of previous government, the department of Pollution Control Board (PCB) had time and again forwarded notice to JMC, Regional Research Laboratory and UEED to stop flowing of sewerage nullahs into the Ranbir Canal but all in vain. Source informed Early Times that the just few days back, on the direction of Minister concerned, the Executive Engineer of Irrigation has sent a notice to JMC, UEED in which he has been particular mentioned that at priority, the sewerage nallah of Muthi which has been flowing into Ranbir canal from couple of years either it will divert or stop, because of which the residents of border area particularly farmer community are compelled to use them that filthy and contaminated water during the time of irrigation. "Despite repeatedly summoned to JMC and UEED to refrain from flowing of contaminated water into canal, the same departments still have failed to execute necessary steps to stop flowing of sewerage nullahs into Ranbir canal", he informed. Pertinently, the 60 km long Ranbir Canal is one of major source of irrigation to border villages- Marh, RS Pura and Bishnah and earlier in peak summer season, the canal water was as potable water and residents of border area have been used to make meal but since JMC was flowing of sewerage water into canal, the habitats has hesitated even to allow the animal to drink canal water. Minister for I&FC, Choudhary Sukhnandan said that former minister was also urged the H&UDD and its bodies either it has been established treatment plant or diverting the sewerage nallah but because of lackadaisical attitude of the department concerned it has been failed to solve the problem, adding, "Despite Apex Court ruling, Water Act 2010 and Environment Act 2006 has been directed to all departments to prevent the body bodies, and also directed, no one has been any right to pollute the water body like Canals and Rivers but after repeatedly apprised to department concerned, they randomly have been violated with the direction of Apex court", he asserted. He further said that in time frame, if the department (H&UD) would unsuccessful to take necessary steps to stop filthy water into canal, than he would pass direction to his own department to barricade all the sewerage nallahs so that "Interest of the farmer community will save, he said." Executive Engineer of Flood Control Department, Dewan Chand said that according to direction of concerned minister, he has passed a notice to UEED that before the completion of Artificial Lake , all the sewerages nallahs should be diverted which are presently flowing into Tawi River since ago. |
