Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, June 28: National Conference working President and former chief minister, Omar Abdullah faced an embarrassing situation the other day when one of his trusted lieutenants distanced himself from the statement of Omar which he made with respect to Minister for Science & Technology and Animal Husbandry Sajad Gani Lone.
Omar had in statement said that Sajad is a 'turncoat' and his life is full of turns made for personal benefits. However, Omar's trusted lieutenant and MLA Sonawari, Mohammad Akbar Lone distanced himself from his working president's statement. Heon Saturday said that since he was busy in the board meeting of Bandipora he does not know anything about the statement.
The former Minister for Higher Education said that he would not like to be part of the statement which has been issued in his absence. This assertion from Akbar, who is a former speaker of the legislative assembly goes against the party politics and does not augur well for the future of National Conference.
It would be in place to mention here that party politics teaches a party man to abide by the policies and also support each and every move of the party. It does not teach a party man to say anything averse to the statement of its top leadership with the president or the working president being at the top of the ladder.
Ideally Akbar should have supported the statement of Omar and said that the statement has been issued only after proper analyzing of the situation. Instead he chose to go opposite to Omar's statement. This proves that things can go awry in the party at any point of time. It seems that Akbar does not want to annoy Sajad and for the same he is ready to go against his working President.
There is no denying the fact that most of the National Conference leaders and workers don't consider Omar as right person to lead National Conference. These people believe that drubbing of National Conference in the 2014 assembly and parliamentary elections was due to the fact that Omar could not enthuse his party workers and leaders before the elections.
Pertinently National Conference managed to bag 15 seats in the 2014 assembly elections (lowest for the party in the assembly elections held so for).
Omar's uncle and additional general secretary of the party, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal has time and again embarrassed his nephew by issuing statements quite contrary to the party policy. Despite repeated warnings from Omar and his father Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Dr. Kamaal continues to embarrass the father-son duo of Dr. Farooq and Omar.
The grassroots workers of National Conference have time and again voiced their concern over the appointment of Nasir Aslam Wani and Devender Singh Rana as Presidents for Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively. Since Nasir and Devender are not too experienced when it comes to National Conference and its history, the resentment against them is quite natural. The repeated requests from old hands of National Conference to remove Nasir and Devender have failed to move Omar so for.
