Yatra arrangements: Traditional track still snow clad | | | Abdul Majid
Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 28: With less than a week left for the scheduled commencement of the annual Amarnathji Yatra on July 2, the arrangements on the ground are fast missing deadlines as even the snow is yet to be cleared from some crucial portions of the mountainous track to the shrine. Officials said such arrangements used to be usually in place a fortnight ahead of the pilgrimage. Official sources said the "poor arrangements" have emerged as a concern for the government following the recent visit of Governor NN Vohra to the cave shrine in the Himalayas. On June 27, Vohra, who is also the Chairman of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board accompanied by PK Tripathi, Chief Executive Officer, of SASB, took stock of the arrangements at the Holy Cave Camp for facilitating the Yatris. Source said the Governor pointed out that the snow clearance work along the steps leading to the Holy Cave via the traditional route was yet to be accomplished. Vohra is understood to have directed RK Pandita, GM (Works) to expeditiously complete snow clearance work along the steps leading to the Cave and provide proper drainage of the snow melt. Also the post snowfall restoration of Chandanwari-Pissu Top- Sheshnag-Mahagunus Top- Poshpatri-Panjtarni track on Pahalgam side is incomplete. This work was to be done by the Pahalgam Development Authority(PDA). "The Governor directed the concerned departments, particularly the PDA, to speed up the ongoing restoration works and ensure the completion latest by 29th June," officials said. Officials said it was primarily the failure of the divisional administration that deadlines for the Yatra arrangements haven't been met. "Frequent transfer of concerned officials has been a main cause of delay in preparedness. Otherwise by now things should have been well in place," said a retired government previously associated with the Yatra arrangements. An official in the administration however put blame on bad weather. "Weather has been rough and thus the work in this mountainous region got affected," the official said adding "still we're trying to meet the deadlines." Meanwhile Vohra has called for "close co-ordination amongst various agencies involved in the management of the Yatra and directed the Camp Directors to have regular daily meetings with all the security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure immediate resolution of any arising problem." |
