Coalition's PDD runs rough weather under 40 degrees Celsius | Ranbir canal's cool waters supplement to Jammuites' need to beat the heat | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 28: Cold waters of the Chenab running as historic Ranbir canal has become the source of relief and delight for Jammuites feeling itched by the sweltering heat. Mercury rising unprecedentedly coupled with erratic and prolonged power cuts have attracted hordes of people thronging on different banks of the canal to keep the heat at bay. The canal is daily witnessing scores of youngsters and locals residents thronging its banks to enjoy the cool environs. The day long power cut in the Jammu city has fueled the problems of the Jammuites in the blazing heat; People were seen sitting on its banks whole day to get some relief. A severe heat wave coupled with long power cuts has raised tempers in the Jammu region and led to resentment against Power development department of the state. Prolonged power curtailments have added to the woes of people in the Jammu region, which is witnessing the temperature touching over 40 degrees and this canal and its distributaries are no less than a boon for the locals to get respite from the scorching heat Historic Ranbir Canal after its completion in 1905, after takeing off from left of Chenab River up-stream Akhnoor Bridge has been offering a 'serene picnic spot' to jammuites in summers that too within city limits. The canal head at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Memorial Park, Satwari (Nai Basti) and other places from this historic canal meanders through under irrigation plan but all such places have become lively with hustle bustle like Chopatti of Mumbai. People from the city keep pouring to the venue while some even take a ride up to the Akhnoor to have leisure time on the western bank of the River Chenab. The heavy rush of the daily visitors to the canal has also attracted the local vendors who make good harvest of this short picnic by the Jammuites and stalls of paani puri (golgappas), watermelon and ice-cream seen swarming around the customers. "Locals and tourist staying in Hotels at Jewel and General Bus Stand throng to canal hardly the sun goes down, said Ram Lal a water melon vendor and claimed a brisk business at late evenings at canal head. Water jumpers at times are seen bathing in sun to maintain their body temperature, while some new comers seem to be dependent on the tyre tubes. However, unscheduled power cuts, coupled with low water supply, have compounded the miseries of the people. Unbridled power outages, particularly during night hours, have also affected the sleeping habits of residents, especially children and elderly people suffering from various ailments. The heat wave forced the residents to stay indoors, while thin movement of vehicles was witnessed on city roads. The rise in temperature has also exposed the ill-preparedness of the Power Development Department (PDD) to deal with the situation as the people have started witnessing long and unscheduled power cuts, which have also blacked out the claims of the PDP-BJP coalition government that the people would have "power-cut free summer". "The Deputy Chief Minister was keen to ensure adequate power supply during Ramadan, which began today, in the Kashmir valley, but he did not think about Muslims in Jammu, who are reeling under 40 plus degree Celsius. Long and unscheduled power cuts are being enforced that have made our lives miserable," stated Vinod resident of Gandhi Nagar Ironically, the PDD authorities were passing the buck on the growing power crisis in the region. They said the department was enforcing eight-hour power cuts in non-metered areas. "Sometimes, transmission lines trip because of high temperature, leading to unscheduled power cuts, but we compensate that locality by avoiding scheduled power cuts." they said. |
