Early Times Report

JAMMU, June 28: Police have worked out the June 22 murder of a man and his son at Sadota near Pancheri, Udhampur, and apprehended the accused. The victims included Saraj Din, son of Jamal Din of Sadota Mohra Mari, Pancheri, and his son Beniya. After Pancheri police station received information in this regard on June 23, a case under section 302/34 of RPC was registered. To work out the case, Mohammad Suleman Choudhary, SSP, Udhampur, constituted a SIT which was headed by professional Police Officer namely Mohan Lal Kaith, additional SP, Udhampur. Its other members included Inspector Sanjay Abrol, SHO of Pancheri police station, Inspector Ashiq Hussain and ASI Sukhdev Singh of Rehmbal police station. The team then rushed to the spot along with FSL personnel.
After reaching the spot, SIT started the investigation of the case after thoroughly inspecting the scene of crime. It also conducted photography of the scene of crime. All the evidences and other traces were lifted by the FSL team. Thereafter, the bodies were shifted to hospital for post-mortem which was conducted by a team of doctors led by Block Medical Officer, Pancheri. After legal formalities, the bodies were handed over to their legal heirs for performing last rights. During the course of investigation, SIT interrogated a number of suspects and finally picked up Kaka Ram, son of Nek Ram of Sadhota mohra Marhi and Khem Raj, son of Isher Dass of Basnote, Mongri. During sutained interrogation, they allegedly confessed to have killed the man-son duo.
The reason behind the double murder was a land dispute which remained subjudice for long and was recently decided in favour of Saraj Din, according to police sources.
Saraj had purchased a piece of land from Kaka Ram's father Nek Ram about 30 years back without any legal agreement. Kaka was not satisfied with the deal as a result of which both the parties used to quarrel with each other. After a number of local panchayat meetings, it was decided that Saraj would pay Rs 70,000 to Kaka by June 20, 2016 but he failed to pay. This led to hot exchange of words between the two parties a few days before the incident which was witnessed by locals as well.
Due to this enmity, Kaka Ram in connivance with Khem Raj allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kill Saraj and his son. Accordingly, both of them equipped themselves with sharp edged axes and reached the house of Saraj on June 22 night. At that time, Siraj and his son were sleeping on a single bed. As per the plan, the accused hit them hard with their axes and killed them on the spot. Later, they fled the spot.
Sources said police had also recovered the axes used in the offence. Further investigation in the case was in progress.
