Early Times Report

Srinagar, June 28: All teaching activities will remain suspended till June 30 in the Kashmir University (KU), where students are protesting against the arrest of their colleague by police for opposing Yoga.
However, police claimed that the Muzamil Farooq, son of Farooq Ahmad, resident of Ganesh Gangebagh Pulwama, a student of KUs English department, was arrested for his links with militants and that he was wanted in a case.
However, students, parents and locals denied the police charges and alleged that he was being framed for opposing Yoga. They contested the police claim and said why was he not arrested before he joined anti yoga protests.
Ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MP and senior leader Tariq Hameed Karra and separatist organisations have demanded immediate release of Muzamil.
A press release issued by the Assistant Registrar Academic Affairs said the suspension of teaching work in the Main Campus was extended up to June 30. However, earlier the teaching work was suspended till yesterday, following boycott by students and massive protests within the campus.
During the night intervening June 20 and 21, massive night-long protests were held in university campus against forcing students to do Yoga on International Day of Yoga.
Later Muzamil was arrested from his rented room at Sadarbal area adjacent to university, evoking massive protests.
As demonstration continued, the students, including a girl belonging to Kashmir valley, were asked to vacate their hostel rooms. A number of girl students alleged they were thrown out of their hostel rooms and bundled in police vehicles and left at Lal Chowk. Mr Karra condemned the police action inside the KU campus and accused the police of turning the situation back to early nineties by such actions. He also demanded immediate release of the arrested student.
