Mirwaiz, Shah to attend Pak HC's Eid Milan | Geelani, Asiya to abstain | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 16: As expected, the Eid Milan invite from Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has hit the separatist reunion efforts. While separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani has turned down the invitation, a two-member delegation of Hurriyat Conference (M) led by chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq will dine at the feast putting the separatist leadership at loggerheads again. Not only this, other separatist leader Shabir Shah is also scheduled to attend the big party. Shahid-ul-Islam, a spokesperson of the Hurriyat (M) said that Mirwaiz will be accompanied by Masroor Abbas Ansari during the visit. Shahid said that Mirwaiz will discuss various contours of Kashmir dispute with the Pakistan leadership. "The recent bilateral talks between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will be discussed with the High Commissioner," Shahid said. Just last week, after years of strained relations due to lack of consensus on ideology, the separatists managed a "show of unity" at Geelani's residence where he, Mirwaiz and Mohammed Yasin Malik passed a joint resolution threatening to incite street protests against the government. But within a week, Mirwaiz and Geelani have parted ways. On the other hand Syeda Asiya Andrabi whose imprisoned husband Dr Qasim Faktoo had sought reunion in the separatist leadership is now supporting the Geelani camp. Early Times had anticipated that the honeymoon of separatist reunion would be short lived following expected confrontation over invitation from Pakistan High Commission. Mirwaiz was desperate to attend the party as over the past few months he has been losing his party strength to Geelani. For Mirwaiz Eid Milan has come as a blessing in disguise to improve relations with Pakistan and play his card against the arch rival. In a surprise snub to Pakistan, hardline Hurriyat leader Geelani on July 14 decided to "boycott" the Eid Milan making it the first time that he has turned down such an invite. Geelani decided to boycott the event as a protest against non-inclusion of Kashmir in the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa in Russia in the first week of July. But Mirwaiz and Shah decided to move in the opposite direction.
