SRINAGAR, July 16: The Modi government has kept all and sundry in J&K guessing about the mega economic package likely to be given to the state.
On ground there seems to be chaos, with contradictory statements being issued by leaders of various political parties.
The first to go to town was Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu who declared that around Rs 70,000 crore would be given as central aid for the state.
For the past four months, Drabu said, the Mufti government has been rigorously pursuing the case and very soon a formal announcement about the quantum of package shall be made by the union Finance Ministry.
Sources however told Early Times that the state government is not privy to the actual amount likely to be given to J&K soon.
“Discussions over central grant have been going on between the state and the union Finance Ministry for quite some time. Though the nod in this regard has been given by the Centre, so far no minister in the state government knows about minute details of the package,” said a senior official, pleading anonymity.
He said it is also uncertain whether the grant would be disbursed in one go or in installments.
Recently, reports suggested that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is eyeing relief package to the tune of Rs 200,000 crore from the Centre over the next five years.
It was also reported that the amount will include a massive relief and developmental package, besies an assured amount of Rs 60,000 crore that J&K will get as its due in five-year period ending March 2020, as per the recommendations of 14th Finance Commission which have been “in-principle” accepted by the government.”
On the other side, the former CM Omar Abdullah quoted the figure of the central grant as Rs 1 lakh crore. Omar went to the extent of terming the package as an attempt to buy the loyalties of the people of state. He claimed the “so-called mega developmental package” worth Rs 100,000 crore to be announced by Modi “is aimed to buy people of Kashmir.”
“Bakshi sahib too was given huge financial aid while Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was lodged in prison. But the package was rejected by the people of Kashmir then and they will reject it now,” Omar said. “The Centre can no more befool people by pumping money while snatching their political rights.”
