Whispers galore: Why he could not make it to Dr Mukerjee related party event …?
Modi attending function of Congress leader unpalatable in BJP circles
7/16/2015 11:59:26 PM
ET Report
Jammu, July 16: As gala arrangements are in place and last minute preparations going on for the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled visit Jammu tomorrow to attend a private function, the countdown to his arrival here is not much of an excitement for the BJP as a party. Within the party circles Modi coming all the way to attend centenary birth celebrations of a veteran Congress leader Girdhari Lal Dogra has not gone well , more so with stalwarts of the party who have grown up with BJP on one hand and faced Congress as rival party with GL Dogra as one its front line leaders. The disappointment is more for the fact Modi's absence was conspicuous and will become marked now in recently organised grand function of the BJP in which late Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's statue was unveiled .
Sources said even though invitations for tomorrow's function have been extended to a number of BJP leaders including ministers, MLAs and functionaries, not many would attend this function as a matter of whole hearted affair, no matter it will have no less dignitary than PM himself as the chief guest. Sources further said since it is the question of protocol, party ministers have no choice than to be present along with the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Syed who will receive the PM at Jammu airport. However, for many stalwarts and senior most leaders of BJP whose association with the party dates back to time when GL Dogra was active in politics, it is rather unpalatable to see PM coming all the way to attend a centenary celebration function of a Congress leader, notwithstanding the fact that Dogra is a respectable figure of J&K state.
However, the displeasure is in the wake of the recently organised function on a large scale for a far more tall and towering leader Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee who sacrificed his life for the cause of nation and had unwavering faith in BJP's core ideology . PM could not make it to that function, possibly because, either the state unit of BJP could not envision his presence for such an important occasion or PMO could not realize the significance of the event. Pertinently, even though Dr Mukherjee's name and popularity weighs more than any one else in the history of BJP across the country for obvious reasons, the gathering in that function did not count even all the leaders within the state itself, not to speak of many union ministers.
While tomorrow's function shall have a galaxy of union ministers on board including high profiled Finance Minister Arun Jaitely, it will be interesting to see Congress leaders, if any, attending the function of their late leader for whom this function is being organised , no matter by a private foundation in his name.
