Despite increase in road mishaps, authorities yet to wake up from slumber | Over-loaded vehicles throw 'safety norms in air | | Arun Trisal Early Times Report
Kathua Aug 6: Overloading in passenger vehicles on roads is running unabated as the traffic police allegedly has failed to keep check over violation of traffic rules putting the lives of daily commuters at risk. Locals demanded administration to take steps to check overloading in vehicles to save precious lives of daily commuters. According to locals the public transport plying on almost all the routes of Kathua District, is extremely overloaded thereby increasing the chances of accidents but none is bothered. Prominent citizens and civil society activists from different parts of the region demanded that administration should check overloading regularly to save precious lives as overloading increases risk of accidents". "Overloading in the passenger vehicles is going on to such an extent that passengers can be seen clinging to body of mini buses, hanging on stairs of vehicles and even sitting on the roof tops, which may give more earnings to the transporters but making passengers prone to accidents, locals added. Even after some fatal road accidents took place due to overloading, traffic police has so far failed to keep a check over the menace and overloading has became a routine affair ", said Vinod Sharma. He further said overloading is on its peak at school and office time when passengers are seen in higher numbers and vehicle owners load passengers much more than the allotted capacity to make easy money. The mini buses plying on the Dayala Chak-jandi Via Hiranagar, Kathua-Hatli, Kathua-Jarai, Rajbagh-Danni Baktha route, Nagri-Kathua Roads and others routes witness more overloading than others due to less frequency of vehicles on these routes. Locals alleged that police department (Traffic) and the operators of these passenger vehicles are hand in glove as traffic police is seen just like a mute spectator to this routine affair becoming a menace for the locals. Gansham Sharma Social activist also alleged pathetic attitude of Traffic Police towards this problem and demanded higher ups to wake up before any eventuality takes place. The overloaded matadors, minibuses and three wheelers keep roaming around but nobody bothers to put a check on them. Social activist Shashi Sharma and a housewife Indu Partap also hummed the similar tones and demanded preventive measures to redress the issue. |
