Success of AIIMS agitation 'slap' on BJP's face | 'People's movement is bigger than any party' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 6: Jammu getting united to seek full-fledged AIIMS for the region has sent a strong message to all the political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), that politicians cannot take people for granted by making hollow promises. The BJP leaders in Jammu region rode on Modi wave to bag 25 seats in 2014 Assembly elections with debutants mauling the stalwarts of Congress and other parties. Jammu people had reposed their faith in BJP with a hope that its leaders would act as the true representatives of the people and would ensure that interests of Jammu are safeguarded. The dismal performance of the BJP leaders after assuming power has disappointed the masses and entire Jammu region observing a complete bandh for six consecutive days sent a strong message to BJP leaders that people are angry with them. "During the election campaigning BJP leaders promised moon and stars to the people and assured them that they would not remain subservient to Kashmiri leadership," said an analyst. He said that promises made by the BJP leaders during election campaigning turned out to be a hoax as they failed to live upto the expectations of the people. "It's unfortunate that when people in Jammu started the campaign to seek AIIMS for the region BJP leaders turned their back towards them and went into a slumber. In the initial stages they ignored the demand and paid no attention towards the hue and cry which people were raising," the analyst added. He said the BJP leaders forgetting the role of Jammu people in their victory and putting them on driver's seat hurt the masses and they gave vent to their ire by revolting against the party which they voted for in hordes just a few months ago. "No BJP leader can take credit for AIIMS being set up in Jammu. It's all due to the efforts of people and they remaining steadfast on their resolve that AIIMS would be set up in the region," the analyst added. An expert while talking to Early Times said that agitation for AIIMS should serve as an eye opener for the BJP leaders and they should mend their ways. "They BJP leaders need to realize that they are not indispensable and if people revolt they can turn the tide against them," he said. "BJP leaders and ministers should come out of their shells and mingle with the people who ensured their victory rather than believing that they are the kings. They have to ensure they side with Jammu whenever the need arises and they cannot act as mute spectators." The AIIMS Coordination Committee, an amalgam of more than 70 organizations, was constituted when BJP leaders failed to react to the situation, had the elected representatives shown the guts and the will they could have led from the front and could have become heroes. Instead they gave false assurances to people to buy the time and made all possible attempts to break the Coordination Committee. Their efforts went in a vain as people gave them a befitting reply. "If BJP leaders want to save their face they should ensure that Centre should issue a notification for the separate AIIMS for the Jammu region without any delay. Centre asking state to identify piece of 200 kanal of land in Jammu and Kashmir for the AIIMS is just a beginning and it needs to be transformed into reality," said an analyst. |
