In absence of permanent faculty, contractuals run the show | 10 yrs on, JU's off-site campuses have become a joke | | Avinash Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 6: Established with fanfare a decade ago, the off-site campuses of Jammu University have become a joke in the name of higher education, as out of seven campuses, five are run by contractual teachers. Of the remaining two campuses, Bhaderwah has got 25 teachers-11 permanent and 14 contractual-to teach five courses, while Kathua campus offers single course and has 12 contractual and one permanent faculty member. The five 'dead' campuses: Kishtwar campus offers four PG courses; all teachers are contractual. Ramnagar campus has 11 contractual teachers for two courses. Udhampur campus offers two courses and has nine contractual teachers, sources told Early Times. Astonishingly, just one course is at the moment offered in Reasi and Poonch campuses, where four and two contractual teachers, respectively, are teaching. Other campuses like Kathua offer MBA, MSc IT, PG in Kashmiri, PG in Geology-Hydrology and Soil Dynamics. Slamming the Jammu University for its failure to strengthen the off-site campuses, a senior professor said, "It seems that these campuses were established for political gain, not for welfare of students. Moreover, allocation of courses in these campuses is also unreasonable. Few campuses offer good courses with adequate number of teachers while the other campuses exist on papers only." He said the university administration should appoint permanent faculty and also introduce more courses in the campuses which offer only one or two courses. No senior official of the Jammu University was available for comments. |
