21 foreign trekkers stranded in Markha, IAF services in place for rescue operations | 'Situation bad' in Leh after cloudbursts: Govt | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 6: Days after intermittent rains and cloudbursts caused damage to many houses besides damaging crops in Leh region, the state government today said that the cloudbursts have caused extensive damage in the region. According to government atleast 21 foreigners are stranded at Markha area of Leh which has been cut off after heavy rains and cloudbursts. "Markha in Leh is cut off from last three days and the water level rose in mountain streams due to cloudbursts. The situation here is bad and I can tell you that the cloudbursts have caused extensive damage to the dozens of houses and besides there are several areas which are cut off from last three days," said I&FC Minister Sukhnandan Kumar here today. The minister said that the government is on job to reach the areas which are cut off from last three days. "We have requested the Air force for their services to reach out the cut off areas. He said that the rescue operations have been started in the region. He however added that it is difficult to reach the areas which are cut off but with the help of Air force we are on the job to reach these areas. "At least 25 residential houses have damaged after a cloudburst struck Choskore Wakha village in Kargil district, he said and added the Manali-Leh highway is also cut off. "The cloudburst has also triggered flash floods in Choskore Wakha village, and other villages in the Kargil," the minister said and added that the government is on the job to reach the affected people and shift them to safer places. |
