Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 21 : Starting September 1, government would give ration as per the 2011 census in the state while presently people get the same according to the 2001 census. "From September 1 this year the state would issue ration as per the 2011 census as earlier the same was given as per the 2001 census," Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Choudhary Zulfkar Ali told reporters here today.
He said the Union Government has agreed to the state's proposal to provide ration as per 2011 census.
He said according to the 2001 census there were a total of 18.2 lakh families in the state which were holding a ration card, but as per the 2011 census the number has increased to 24.7 lakh. "There has been addition of over 6.5 lakh ration card holder families in the new census," he said.
He said while earlier the state had to procure 7.56 lakh metric tons of ration from the Centre now it would procure 10.30 lakh metric tons. He said the state government would provide a subsidy of Rs 10 on every kilogram of rice, "The rice which is being sold at Rs 26 per kilogram, will be sold at Rs 16 per kilogram at the government ration shops, thus we will give a subsidy of Rs 10," he said.
While earlier the state government used to spend Rs 474 crore a month on procuring ration, now, as per the new census, the state will have to spend Rs 701.82 crore for the same, he added. He said the new distribution policy would be implemented from the September 1 and would be applicable in all the three regions of the state.
