Investigations intensified into Udhampur attack, focus on Kashmir | NIA wants JK police to be proactive | | Abdul Majid Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 21: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) which recently shifted the captured Pakistani militant Mohammed Naved to Srinagar for further investigations has called upon the State police to be "proactive" so that Udhampur like incidents could be averted in future. Highly placed sources said Director General, NIA, Sharad Kumar, who recently visited Kashmir asked the police to be proactive so that militant attacks could be avoided. "He told the State police that the sudden spurt in militant attacks in the State speaks about police negligence on some fronts of vital importance," said a police official asking not to be named. Kumar, during his Kashmir visit, also called on Governor NN Vohra and briefed him about the to-date status of the investigation in the recent Udhampur terror attack. Sources said the State police have been accused of working on "misplaced priorities." "At a time when vigil has to be improved, the police have been found concentrating more on civic action programs and sports activities in Kashmir," the sources said, adding that the Central Government has asked the police to bring "major changes its strategies to counter rising militancy related incidents." Meanwhile NIA is hopeful to get a major breakthrough into the Udhampur attack through investigations in Kashmir even as a truck driver who allegedly ferried Naved for the attack has been caught. Sources said Naved was brought here after he divulged a lot of information during lie detector test in New Delhi. Naved has told investigators about his two Pakistani colleagues, still at large and could be hiding in Kashmir. "His contradictory statements have kept us on toes, the answers he gave in the lie detector test however helped NIA to get further leads and that is why he was brought here," sources said, adding the truck driver who has been caught was being questioned. They said massive manhunt has been launched for the two Pakistani militants reportedly operating under the names of Zargham alias Mohammad Bhai and Abu Okasha who allegedly handled Naved, the captured militant during Udhampur attack. Naved, as per reports, has admitted during the polygraph test in New Delhi that he is from Pakistan and was trained at LeT camp there. At least two BSF soldiers were killed and nine wounded when militants attacked a convoy on the Srinagar-Jammu highway. While other militants managed to flee, Naved was caught alive. However, instead of being taken into police custody, NIA took him for investigations. |
