Declare Abdul Basit persona non-grata, throw him out of India | Separatists only represent themselves | | Early Times Report jammu, Aug 21: Uncouth and provocative Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit on Thursday made a ridiculous claim that separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Yasin Malik and Shabir Ahmad Shah were "true representatives" of Kashmir and it would be only desirable if their views on Jammu & Kashmir ascertained before the National Security advisor-level talks between India and Pakistan to be held in Delhi on August 23-24. He made this provocative statement after the coalition Government in Jammu & Kashmir ordered the detention of these separatists, who were later on released and allowed free movement so that they could travel to Delhi and meet with the visiting Pakistan National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz. It is difficult to say at this point in time if the scheduled meeting would finally take place - difficult because the Pakistani invitation to Kashmiri separatists has vitiated the whole atmosphere. New Delhi will lose face in case it allowed meetings between Aziz and separatists. Last August, the External Affairs Ministry had cancelled the Foreign Secretary-level talks following the provocative meetings between Abdul Basit and Kashmiri separatists. Similarly, Pakistan would lose its face in case it held talks with Indian National Security advisor Ajit Doval without holding a meeting with separatists before talks between Aziz and Doval took place. Things are quite uncertain as of now. Coming back to the assertion of Pakistani High Commissioner that separatists like Geelani were the true representatives of Kashmir. It was an exaggerated claim or a claim that was politically motivated, ill-designed and provocative. None of the Kashmiri separatists enjoy any universal support even in Kashmir what to talk of Jammu region and cold-desert Ladakh, well-known abodes of nationalist people. These separatists have areas of influence limited to only a few pockets in Srinagar City and a few other places. Take, for example, Yasin Malik. His area of influence is a part of the Maisuma locality in Srinagar City. Similarly, the area of influence of Mirwaiz is Jamia Masjid and its surrounding areas. As for Geelani, his area of influence is confined to parts of Hyderpora locality and parts of Sopore town. About Shah, less said the better. He is neither here nor there. None of these so-called self-styled freedom fighters has any support-base either in Jammu region or Ladakh province. The people of these two regions are patriotic and they hate the ideology the Kashmiri separatists practice and advocate. Yes, they remain in the limelight. The reason is that there are elements in the establishments in the State and at the Centre who pamper them, promote them and allow them to organize anti-India activities in different parts of the Valley so that they keep the Kashmir pot boiling and grind their own personal axe. Separatist movement in Kashmir is, in fact, a money-minting business and everyone wants to loot and plunder the Indian taxpayer money. It's no more a secret that many undesirable Kashmiris and the vested interests, who hobnob with the separatists, have become multi-millionaire and that Kashmir witnessed all round development on an unprecedented scale after Pakistan-sponsored militancy and fanaticism gripped the Valley in the late 1980s. These separatists also remain in the limelight because there are sections in the print and electronic media who give disproportionate coverage to these anti-nationals and whatever they do to promote the Pakistani cause or to promote their regressive ideology. The fact of the matter is that these handful separatists survive and thrive on the support from those quarters whose duty it is to bring them to justice for their acts of treachery against the nation. The point is that Abdul Basit has been breaching the red line ever since he assumed office of High Commissioner in Delhi. He has consistently interfered in the internal affairs of India and made provocative speeches. He has, in fact, converted his office into a den of anti-India activities. New Delhi must declare him persona- non-grata and throw him out of India with the contempt he deserves for his subversive activities. The sooner New Delhi does so the better. For, Basit has crossed all the limits. |
