Nationalist, media pressure forces BJP to eat words on Hurriyat
No talks before or after NSA-level talks

Early Times Report
jammu, Aug 21: The BJP-led NDA Government has finally told Pakistan that New Delhi would be forced to cancel the National Security Advisor-level talks, scheduled to be held on August 23 and 24, in case the visiting Pakistani National Security Advisor Sartaj Aziz stuck to the stand that he would meet with some Hurriyat leaders on August 23 and some others on August 24. Statement to this effect was made by the spokesperson of the Indian Foreign Office and it was similar to the one OF his predecessor had made on August 18, 2014. The issue was the same. The Indian Foreign Office also said that talks with terror, and not on terror, would be against the spirit of the July 10, 2015 India-Pakistan joint-statement at Ufa in Russia. The upshot of its whole suggestion to Pakistan was that if it was interested in discussing terrorism with India, New Delhi would welcome the talks and that Aziz will be not be allowed to raise the Kashmir issue during the scheduled meeting.
It is obvious that the nationalist pressure and the media's massive 24x7 intervention have worked with the BJP Government at the Centre finding it extremely difficult to allow Pakistan to dictate terms or allow Pakistan to use Indian soil for converting the bilateral issue between India and Pakistan into a trilateral issue between India, Pakistan and Hurriyat leaders, who are actually Kashmir-based Pakistani agents. This is a positive development, notwithstanding the fact that the nation is against the idea of any kinds of talks with Pakistan for reasons not really difficult to fathom.
It is very important to note that the latest stand of the Modi Government on Hurriyat leaders doesn't match with what it said in the agenda of alliance under that became the basis of formation of the PDP-BJP coalition Government on March 1, 2015. It is altogether different from the stand the BJP had taken during those days when the BJP and the PDP were drafting the agenda of alliance.
The agenda of alliance had clearly said that Hurriyat leaders were the internal stakeholders and they and Pakistan would be taken on board to resolve the Kashmir issue.
"The Union Government has recently initiated several steps to normalize the relationship with Pakistan. The coalition Government will seek to support and strengthen the approach and initiatives taken by the Government to create a reconciliatory environment and build stakes for all in the peace and development within the sub-continent. The same will be pursued by taking confidence building measures such as, enhancing people to people contact on both sides of the LoC encouraging civil society exchanges, taking travel, commerce, trade and business across the LoC to the next level and opening new routes across all three regions to enhancing connectivity. The earlier NDA Government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee had initiated a dialogue process with all political groups, including the Hurriyat Conference, in the spirit of 'Insaaniyat, Kashmiriyat aur Jamhooriyat'. Following the same principles, the coalition Government will facilitate and help to initiate a sustained and meaningful dialogue with all internal stakeholders, which will include all political groups irrespective of their ideological views and predilections. This dialogue will seek to build a broad based consensus on resolution of all outstanding issues of J&K," said the agenda of alliance, which was released to the press by the newly-appointed Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed at his official residence in Jammu on March 1 at about 1.30 pm.
What does this show? It shows that the BJP, which defied the Jammu mandate and betrayed people of this region to become part of the establishment, has also betrayed the PDP by doing a complete U-turn on Hurriyat. However, the BJP doesn't deserve any credit for the stand New Delhi finally took. Full credit goes to the wounded and alienated-from-the-BJP Indian nation and the very positive role of the nationalist and ever-alert media. As for the BJP, each and every right-thinking Indian is condemning it and accusing it of bringing shame to India by following a foreign policy which is no foreign policy at all. The BJP has lost its face, appeal and sheen and today it is being described by the people, politicians, media persons, defence experts and strategic affairs experts as the "most confused, politically dishonest and ideologically bankrupt party" and "a party which is committed only to power".
