Early Times Report
jammu, Aug 21: Situation remained tensed in Samba district after protesters clashed with police at several places for the second consecutive day today, defying curfew restrictions.
While curfew was lifted and Jammu-Pathankot national highway was thrown open to vehicular traffic, prohibitory restrictions under Sec 144 od CrPC remained imposed along the highway. Since last night, around a dozen people including six civilian, and five police officers have been injured in stone pelting and baton charge.
Army conducted flag march on the highway but protestors at Purmandal Morh and Sarore Adda tried to disrupt the movement of vehicles resulting in clashes with police. The protesters also resorted to stone pelting. Police used smoke shells to disperse them and also resorted to baton charge.
Sources said that police and para-military forces are on job and are maintaining the traffic on highway while keeping watch on the situation to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner, Samba, Sheetal Nanda today chaired a meeting of prominent citizens and representatives from various political, non-political organizations and sarpanchs to review the situation.
The district administration sought cooperation from the people to restore peace in the district where protesters torched three to four vehicles including a truck and a motorbike, besides damaging many vehicles including that of DC Samba.
Since last night, as many as a dozen people including six civilian and five police officers were injured in clashes. The injured police officers include SDPO Vijaypur S S Sambyal, SDPO Bari Brahmana Kulbir Handa, SHO Bari Brahmana Bharat Sharma, SHO Vijaypur Rajeshwar Singh, and SHO Ramgarh Shiv Dev Singh.
SHO Ramgarh has been referred to Amandeep Hospital for further treatment after he suffered fracture in the clashes with protesters. "He was rushed to the GMCH, Jammu, from where he was referred to Amandeep Hospital for advanced treatment," sources said.
The civilian who were admitted in GMCH included Rakesh Sharma son of Kuldeep Singh of Jakh, Varinder Singh son of Waryam Singh of Odiagana, Joginder Singh son of Shamsher Singh of Palli Morh.
The deputy commissioner, while talking to Early Times, said "Curfew restrictions have been relaxed for some time in Samba and curfew will again be imposed strictly in the morning to maintain law and order in the district.
She further said that the rumour about sacrilegious act was found totally baseless.
"No cow was killed at Samba. The animal has been identified as a buffalo calf after post mortem, which had died more than 96 hours ago and seemed to have reached the spot floating in water," she clarified in a statement.
She also assured that there have been no major injuries to anybody.
"People should not fall prey to emotional blackmailing and beware of rumour mongers bent upon disturbing peace for vested interests," she said.
Intermittent violent protest sparked late last evening in Samba district when a beheaded corpse of a milch animal was found along the canal near Raya Morh of village Jakh in Samba.
