Early Times Report
Anantnag, Sept 16: With harvesting season approaching, the Government hasn't yet given final nod much hyped 'Market Intervention Scheme' meant for exporting quality fruit to market and procuring 'C' grade fruit from the farmers. The alleged 'intentional' delay by the government has left growers of this year's untimely hailstorm affected areas of Anantnag district in distress. Official sources in Horticulture Marketing and Planning Department revealed that they have not yet received any formal orders from the government regarding the implementation of the scheme, however they said that the department has finished all the paper work. Area marketing officer Anantnag, Shakeel Ahmad confirmed to Early Times that the department hasn't yet any formal orders from the government regarding the implementation of the scheme. "Once we will receive formal orders from the government we will procure grade 'C' fruits from the farmers particularly in Dachnipora area," he added. He said that the department has almost completed the paper work required for the implementation of the scheme. "As desired by the government we carried out extensive survey, identified locations for collection centres and submitted proposal with the government," Shakeel Ahmad said. The alleged 'intentional' delay by the government in implementing the 'Market Intervention Scheme' has left growers of this year's untimely hailstorm affected areas of Anantnag district in distress. "Various varieties of fruit have matured due to this year's hailstorm so if the government will not implement it now then the scheme will serve no purpose and can't provide any relief to growers," Aijaz Ahmad, a Khiram resident told Early Times. He said that several delegations of growers met the officials of Horticulture department and Minister concerned and sought immediate implementation of the scheme. "Kashmir fruit industry had earned a bad image in past years due to sale of mixed grades of fruit. So if the government wants to erase that label it was to implement it without wasting anytime," he added. Minister for Horticulture, Abdul Rehman Veeri on being contacted sought a week's time. "Government is committed to implement the scheme and within a week's time Horticulture Marketing and Planning Department will receive formal orders," he said. Pertinently, Government this May announced that it will re-implement the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) to ensure the exportation of high quality fruit in the market. Under the scheme government will procure C-grade apples from the growers for processing purposes. |
