Govt sleeps on threat posed by Baglihar dam | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 16: Successive governments in Jammu and Kashmir have endangered entire Chenab valley and nobody seems aware of the possible threat emanating from the Baglihar power project reservoir. This 30 to 35 km-long reservoir has caused extensive damage to the area causing landslides and land sinking on regular basis. Geologists have warned against the dangers posed by the dam. According to them, if the dam water doesn't recede and banks are not made concrete, things will take an ugly turn in the next two years. It has been observed that stagnant water of the dam has entered the loose soil on both banks of the river which is now entering deep. Due to this, loose soil not able to absorb the pressure of huge mountains and whenever rainfall starts, it cause landladies and sinking. Many times, the state government as well as central government has been made aware about this fact that lives of more than seven lakh people of Doda and Kishtwar districts are in danger and in case the dam bursts, it can cause huge damage. But neither the state nor the central government is paying heed to the threat emanating out from this deadly power project. At present the state government is generating 450 mega watt electricity from first phase of Baglihar project. But not a single penny has been used to make the banks on both sides of the dam concrete which could save the area. Leaders from this region are also mum over the issue as many among them may be involved in minting money from the project. Since the start of the project, successive governments have not taken any step to address the climatic and other issue related to this project which is becoming a threat for the entire area. |
