Implement Parliamentary resolution to check Chinese activities in Gilgit-Baltistan | Pak violating UN resolution | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 16: The UN Resolution of August 13, 1948 clearly asks Pakistan to vacate not only the so-called Azad Kashmir but also the strategic Gilgit-Baltistan region and recognises Indian sovereignty in these areas, which were part of the undivided Jammu & Kashmir and which Pakistan annexed after waging war on India. It also clearly says that a referendum would be organised in the Jammu & Kashmir State as it existed on August 15, 1947 after complete peace was restored and that India will station its troops in these areas to maintain law and order. To be more precise, the UN resolution appreciates the Indian standpoint. Sadly, however, no Government at the Centre has ever tried to retrieve those areas, despite the fact that the international body recognised the Indian stand on Jammu and Kashmir 67 years ago, as also despite the fact that the Indian Parliament not once but thrice adopted unanimous resolutions on Jammu & Kashmir in 1994 and 2013, all during the Congress-led regimes. Yes, the Indian Foreign Office did on some occasions said that the issue which still remained unresolved between India and Pakistan was the political future on the Jammu & Kashmir territories which had been under the Pakistani illegal occupations, but it didn't really mean that. The result was that Pakistan consolidated its position in these areas and also hobnobbed with China to create difficulties for India. Pakistan not only allowed China to enter our territories for hatching conspiracies against India, but also ceded part of the state territories (in the Aksai Chin area) to Beijing (China). Had New Delhi asserted its authority and sincerely worked for the integration of the so-called Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan with India, the situation across the LoC would not have been alarming for India. Still, everything is not lost yet. New Delhi can start afresh and tell the international community that both Pakistan and China are indulging in conspiratorial activities in these areas to further their sinister agenda in the region and that they should put pressure on Islamabad and Beijing to withdraw from the Jammu & Kashmir territories. New Delhi has to adopt a pro-active policy to protect its boundaries and sovereign interests. Adoption of a pro-active policy has become all the more imperative considering the developments which took place in Gilgit-Baltistan on Monday. The case in point is the inauguration by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of five "Pakistan-China Friendship Tunnels", which will be built at the cost of about USD 275 million and these will restore a strategic road link to China via Gilgit-Baltistan. The tunnels are, as per a report, part of a 24 kilometre realignment project which has been completed in collaboration with China in over three years. The "Pakistan-China Friendship Tunnels" are the network of seven-km-long five tunnels which restored Karakorum Highway (KKH) near Attabad lake in Hunza valley of Gilgit- Baltistan region in the country's north. The Attabad lake was formed following a heavy landslide in 2010 which severed a large section of the Karakoram Highway. According to a report, the restoration of KKH is linked with the USD 46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project. Radio Pakistan reported that the repaired road is part of 24 kms long portion of the KKH, which also includes two big and 78 small bridges. It costs about USD 275 million. The tunnels have been constructed by the National Highway Authority (NHA) in collaboration with the China Road and Bridge Corporation. The NHA officials briefed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the details of the project and status of up-gradation of other parts of KKH. Governor of Gilgit Baltistan Barjees Tahir, Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan Hafeezur Rehman and China's Ambassador to Pakistan Sun Weidong were also present on the occasion. Everything is in public domain. There is no reason for New Delhi to dither. It should launch a multi-pronged attack on Islamabad and it should also tell Beijing that its activities in the Jammu & Kashmir territories shall not be tolerated. It should use diplomatic means and it should also think in terms of adopting some other course. The best thing for New Delhi to do would be to implement the 1994 and 2013 national resolves and make all efforts to retrieve the areas from Pakistan which are lawfully Indian. Only such an action could held New Delhi check the Chinese activities in our territories and show Pakistan its rightful place. |
