NC's new general secretary not 'acceptable' to many in party ranks | Sagar yet to come out of 'ministry mode' | | Early Times Report jammu, Sept 16: National Conference's firebrand leader Ali Mohammad Sagar may well have replaced the position and designation of party's veteran Sheikh Nazir as general secretary but he is far from having reached late leader's stature and standing in terms of acceptability of the cadre. Sagar is learnt to have neither come out of the 'ministry' mode nor is he in mood to deliver in capacity of the assigned task and responsibility. Sources said even as the NC high command chose off all the people in the old guard Sagar for the post of general secretary ahead of Nazir's demise last year, many in the party ranks have yet to accept this 'replacement'. There are certain reasons they attribute to their aversion to the reality, sources said, adding that more than drawing any parallels between the two leaders, it is Sagar's own failure to make people grasp that he is the new general secretary of the party. Sources said while Sheikh Nazir had his unique set of qualities as a politician which made him popular and more than acceptable as tall leader of the party, it was the deep understanding of the nerve of supporters at the grass root level besides vast experience which made acceptable at all ranks and levels of the biggest party. Nazir never accepted to be accommodated against any higher post and always stuck to this post and position for decades, sources which reflected in a big way his sense of dedication for the party. On the contrary, even though Ali Mohamamd Sagar is experienced and his association with the party is quite old, he is not able to produce that charisma and popularity among the party cadres especially in Kashmir which is main constituency of the NC, sources added. Sources further said though Sagar has been making hard hitting and politically loaded statements day in and day out in a bid to keep NC alive on the ever changing political climate and canvass of the State, he has not been able to generate huge support from the ground level while delivering responsibility of this post. Sources said one of the main reason for this is the self inflicted flaw in modus operandi as he still works in style and mode of a Minister, something which is repulsive at the level of cadres who matter for the post of general secretary. It is pertinent to mention that National Conference in its first reshuffle after the Lok Sabha polls debacle, appointed Ali Mohammad Sagar as the party general secretary last year while he was the Cabinet Minister in the then NC-Congress coalition Government. This change was effected by the high command in the wake of ailing Sheikh Nazir who was bed ridden and no longer able to work. Sheikh Nazir, it may be recalled was the cousin of Dr Farooq Abdullah who held the post of general secretary since 1996. Sagar's appointment as general secretary was aimed at rejuvenating the party cadres ahead of Assembly elections last year in September. |
