Kashmir shuts against mysterious killing of three North Kashmir youth, protests at many places | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 16: Life came to a grinding halt across Kashmir valley due to a strike call given by separatist groups against the 'mysterious' killing of three youth in the Pattan area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Reports reaching here said that strike was complete in majority of the towns and townships across Kashmir with protests also being reported from some areas. The impact of the strike was felt more at the district headquarters with the situation being somewhat normal in the countryside of the valley. In Srinagar, summer capital of the state the impact of the strike was quite evident in the commercially important Lal Chowk and the adjacent areas. The strike was also complete in the downtown areas of the city. However, in some of the uptown areas the strike was partial with people carrying out their normal activities. Schools, colleges and the government departments witnessed a thin attendance in the Srinagar city with very few people turning up. As the public transport was off the roads it became difficult for the people to reach their respective destinations. Skeletal private transport could be seen operating on the roads in the city. Shops and commercial establishments were closed in most of the areas with only few shops remaining opened in uptown Srinagar and some areas of other districts of Kashmir. Life came to a standstill in the Lal Chowk, Regal Chowk, Residency Road, Abi Guzar, Maulana Azad Road, Court Road, Koker Bazar, Maisuma, Gaw Kadal, Budshah Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Maharaja Bazar, Gonikhan and Sarie Bala areas as the strike was complete in these areas. Same was the case with the areas of downtown Srinagar where each and every aspect of life was affected due to the strike. Reports of shutdown have also been received from Sopore, Pattan, Palhallan, Sangrama and other areas of North Kashmir's Baramulla district. People living in areas of districts like Ganderbal, Kupwara and Bandipora districts also observed a complete shutdown against the killing of youth. Complete shutdown was also observed in Shopian, Anantnag, Kulgam and Pulwama districts of South Kashmir. Clashes broke out between the youth and security forces personnel at Habba Kadal, Kawdara, Rajouri Kadal and Saraf Kadal areas in Srinagar city. Clashes have also been reported from Kakapora, Khudwani and Qaimoh areas in South Kashmir. Clashes broke out in Mochuwa, Pattan and Palhallan areas in Central and North Kashmir. Police lobbed dozens of smoke shells and pepper shells towards protesters. The clashes between the youths and security forces continued for several hours. The call for strike was given by the parallel factions of Hurriyat Conference and Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front. Pertinently, bodies of three youth were recovered from an orchard at Dangarpora-Pattan in Baramulla district on Monday morning. While police claimed that the trio of youth belonged to Lashkar-e-Islami and were killed by Hizbul Mujahideen, the Hizbul Mujahideen claimed that the youth were their cadre and they were killed by Special Operations Group of Jammu & Kashmir Police. The youth were identified as Ashiq Ahmad Wani, Amir Ahmad Reshi and Naveed Ahmad Khan. |
