Landslides lead to closure of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway | | | S Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Sept: A major portion of road on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway near Khanpora in this North Kashmir district got badly damaged on Tuesday night due to landslides triggered by fast blowing winds which created panic among the locals. Meanwhile, locals blame the BEACON authorities for their negligence as they had observed the cracks in past. Early Times has learnt that a stretch of road about one Km has caved in near Shelputri Mandir in Khanpora area of Baramulla town on Tuesday night thus creating panic among the local populace of Khanpora and its adjacent areas. The Shelputri Mandir also suffered partial damages in the incident. Road connecting Srinagar to Muzaffarabad skidded about 70 feet from a deep gorge at Khanpora near Shiputri mandir in Baramulla town. Local residents held the BEACON responsible for the landslides. The locals said that while travelling through this road everyday they find cracks from past one month. They fear that there are chances of more land erosion in the area. Alleging the concerned authorities for their negligence, the district administration the locals said that BEACON and R&B were well aware about the cracks which were visible on the road, even than after they couldn't took precautionary measures to avert the tragedy, said locals. Locals said that four people boarding a Tata Mobile had a narrow escape when the road near Khanpora bridge caved in, thus creating chaos and confusion among the local residents of the area. At the time of incident, a Tata mobile boarding four persons including the driver were on its way to Uri from Srinagar went into a deep gorge. However the local police was immediately informed who did rescue operation and saved the lives of all the men in time. On Tuesday late evening, fast blowing wind storm has uprooted big walnut and other poplar trees in various parts of Baramulla town. A top official said the displacement of soil took place as surface water coming from the upper hills had sunk the major portion of road. "The caving in of the road has disconnected Uri with rest of the valley, however the vehicular movement was disrupted all efforts were on to connect the cut off area on war footing basis," said official. Soon after the incident, locals, police, army and SDRF men reached the spot and rescued the CRPF men and the driver of the vehicle. Many remote areas of Uri were cut off from the district headquarters after the incident. Official said that about 60-70 meters stretch along Jhelum River at caved in near Khanpora area on the highway. While as in this incident a few CRPF troopers, guarding a temple, and a Tata mobile got trapped. Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Yasha Mudgal told Early Times that the district administration has pressed the men and machinery into the service, so that the cut off area would be connected immediately. BEACON authorities are working tirelessly on an alternative road for the vehicular movement, so that the area could be connected with rest of the valley, said Mudgal. |
