Citing political intervention, ULB employees threaten to carry Valley wide agitation | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 19: The employees of Urban Local Bodies (ULB) department today threatened to carry out valley wide agitation in case their problems are not solved at the earliest. Addressing the protesting employees of ULB at the Directorate, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori, Chairman Urban Local Bodies Employees United Forum (ULBEUF) said that political interference has virtually 'decimated' the department. Manzoor said the situation is back to square one since politicians are interfering in the functioning of the department. "The employees are being transferred or posted on political consideration. Ministers, legislators and other politicians have virtually played havoc with the department. As accountability is missing there is nobody to be held responsible for the mess created in the department. The buck does not stop anywhere and the field is open," said Manzoor. The ULBEUF Chairman said that 'tainted' officials whose guilt has already been established are being given prime postings. He said on the other side the honest officials are being disregarded by not giving them important positions. He equated the present scenario with that of the scenario present during the previous National Conference-Congress coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah. "We had great hopes with the present government but that too have failed to set the matters right in the department. A free hand has been given to the politicians and they are enjoying like anything. The tall claims of transparency and accountability have fallen flat since there is nothing like that," said Manzoor. The ULBEUF Chairman said that Directorate of Urban Local Bodies is without a Director since the last six months as Commissioner Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department Bipul Pathak has been given the additional charge of Director. He termed this decision an insult to the employees of the department since their issues are not being solved. "On one side the government is too keen to hold the municipal elections while as on the other hand there is nobody to look after the affairs of department in Kashmir. As the people at helm are not serious in resolving the issues let them close down the department and we the employees would see what we can do," said Manzoor. The ULBEUF Chairman said that there is public resentment against the department as it has failed to come to the expectations of people especially in providing sanitation services to them. He said if the government fails then they would be forced to carry out valley wide agitation and also hold protests during the autumn session of assembly that starts from October 3. |
